Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1 1/2 cups fresh whole grain bread crumbs (see tip)
  • 1/2 cup 1% milk
  • 1 pound extra-lean ground sirloin
  • 8 ounces light mild Italian sausage (remove casing and break into very small pieces)
  • 1/3 cup packed freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon each salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for browning

Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 cup diced red onions
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can diced plum tomatoes with their liquid
  • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh basil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt and freshly ground black pepper

Pasta

  • 1 pound high-fibre spaghetti (see tip)
