10 slender asparagus spears, tough ends trimmed away

Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes
Water
1/2 medium red onion, cut into thin slivers
1/4 cup wine vinegar
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons tightly-packed fresh basil, chopped
small cluster of chives, snipped into little pieces
