• 1/4 cup  light corn syrup
• 6 1/2 tablespoons  water
• 1 pinch  salt
• 1 1/2 teaspoons  vanilla extract
• 3-4 drops  red food color, preferably natural (see Note), optional
• 1/2 cup  (approximately) confectioners' sugar for dusting
• 14 ounces  semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
• 1-3 teaspoons  canola oil, if needed
