- 8-10 large, very ripe tomatoes
- 1/4 tsp sugar
- 2 medium bell peppers, chopped
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 1 rib celery, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced ( or 1 1/2 tsp minced)
- salt and black pepper to taste
- pinch whie pepper
- 2 cups bread crumbs, divided use
- Fresh grated parmesan cheese (optional)
- 1/2 lb browned ground beef if using as main dish
