Ingredients

  • 1 onion, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons peeled and coarsely chopped fresh ginger root
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, about 1 medium clove
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or more to taste
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 4 cups water
  • Chopped fresh cilantro, to taste, for serving
