    1 1/2 pounds boneless leg of lamb, trimmed and cubed
    3 large onions, halved and thinly sliced
    4-6 garlic cloves, crushed
    1 tsp. grated fresh ginger
    1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
    1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
    1 cinnamon stick
    3-4 cups beef broth
    1 can chickpeas, drained
    1 cups baby carrots
    1/2 cup dried figs, halved (or other dried fruit)
    salt and pepper
