Lager-Steamed Mussels with Mustard, Kielbasa and Dill

Ingredients

  1. 4 thick slices of white peasant bread
  2. 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing
  3. 2 garlic cloves—1 left whole, 1 thinly sliced
  4. 1/2 pound kielbasa sausage, quartered and thinly sliced
  5. 1 medium shallot, minced
  6. Salt and freshly ground pepper
  7. 4 pounds mussels, scrubbed
  8. 1 1/2 cups lager
  9. 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  10. 2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard
  11. 1/4 cup coarsely chopped dill
