Curried Lentils with Tomatoes and Yogurt Cucumbers

Ingredients

  1. 2 ounces lean thick-sliced bacon, cut crosswise into 1/3-inch strips (about 1/2 cup)
  2. 1 medium onion, minced
  3. 3 tablespoons minced fresh ginger
  4. 1 tablespoon curry powder
  5. 1 jalapeo, seeded and minced
  6. 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  7. 1 pound French green lentils, rinsed and picked over
  8. 2 cups water
  9. 2 cups chicken or vegetable stock or canned low-sodium broth
  10. Salt and freshly ground pepper
  11. 1 large European cucumberpeeled, halved lengthwise, seeded and thinly sliced crosswise
  12. 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  13. 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  14. 1/2 cup buttermilk
  15. 1/4 cup sour cream
  16. 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
  17. 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  18. 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved
