  • 400g (14 oz) dried brown lentils, rinsed and drained
  • 750ml (1 1/4 pints) chicken stock
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 medium carrots, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 150g (5 oz) cooked ham, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon caraway seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt
  • handful chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
