Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups whole or 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup dry sherry or other dry white wine or white grape juice
  • 3 large egg yolks, beaten
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 2 packages (3 oz each) ladyfingers (24 ladyfingers)*
  • 1/2 cup strawberry preserves
  • 1 pint (2 cups) fresh strawberries, sliced, or 1 box (10 oz) frozen sliced strawberries, thawed, drained
  • 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons slivered almonds, toasted
