Ingredients

    3 tbsp canola oil
    1 tbsp yellow split peas
    1 tbsp black mustard seeds (opt)
    1 tsp cumin seeds
    3 whole dried red chiles
    1/2 fresh hot green chile, minced, w/ seeds
    1/8 tsp asafetida (opt)
    12 fresh or 15 frozen curry leaves, torn into pieces (opt)
    2 tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut (opt)
    1/2 small head green cabbage, cored and finely chopped (about 4 cups)
    1/2 small head red cabbage, cored and finely chopped (about 4 cups)
    1/2 tsp salt, or to taste
    1/2 lime
