Halloween Recipe: Creepy Crawly Nightcrawlers

Ingredients

  • 12 large, firm apples
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup raspberry, cherry or strawberry jam
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
  • 12 gummy worms

Cooking Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. With a sharp paring knife, core the apples, leaving about a half-inch of the core in the bottom of the apple. This ensures that the filling won't leak out.
  3. Using a teaspoon, place 1 teaspoon of butter into the hole in each apple. Spoon about 1 or 2 teaspoons of jam on top of the butter.
  4. In a large baking dish, place the apples in a single layer. Place the pan in the oven and bake the apples for about 35 minutes, or until they are soft and tender, but not mushy.
  5. Remove the apples from the oven and let them sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Place the baked apples onto a large platter and insert a gummy worm into the top of each apple, making sure that at least half of its 'body' is sticking out.

Make-Ahead

This recipe can be made a few hours in advance of the party, but plan to serve the apples on the same day you make them.

Tips & Tricks

  • For this dish, choose apples that hold their shape during the baking. Rome Beauties, Pippins or Braeburns are all excellent choices, but avoid McIntosh apples as they tend to lose their shape during baking but are great options for making applesauce.

  • For a pretty presentation, spoon some of the syrup from the baking pan around each apple.

  • The baked apples can also be placed in individual cereal or dessert bowls and arranged on the table.

  • It's easy to cut this recipe in half if your party is small or if you just want to serve your family a scary dessert on Halloween.

How kids can help

  • Kids can help make this recipe by putting the butter and the jam into each hollowed-out apple.
  • Once the apples are baked and cooled, let the kids decorate them with the gummy worms.
  • If your child likes raisins, add a few of these to each apple, along with the jam.
