Corn Cakes with Apples and Sausage

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 6 tablespoons butter, 4 melted and 2 chilled
  • 1 pound bulk sausage, formed into 8 patties
  • 2 red apples (such as Fuji or Gala), cored and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • Warm maple syrup, for serving
