Ingredients
- dried fruit Compote (can make 2 days ahead)
- At least 2 pounds of mixed dried fruit (cherries, cranberries, apricots, blueberries, whatever)
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1/2 cup orange juice (fresh is best)
- 1/4 cup cognac or rum (can use less or eliminate)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 cinnamon sticks (can use powdered 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon)
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla OR 1 vanilla bean split
- 2 cups boiling water
- cake
- 1 box yellow cake mix (white is OK)
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 stick butter, softened
- 1/2 cup slivered almonds (optional)
