Toffee Almond Crunch Cake

Ingredients

CAKE

  1. 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (not Dutch process)
  3. 2 teaspoons baking powder
  4. 2 teaspoons baking soda
  5. 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  6. 2 cups sugar
  7. 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  8. 4 large eggs, at room temperature
  9. 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
  10. 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  11. 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

FROSTING

  1. 1/2 pound bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
  2. 1/4 pound unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
  3. 1 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature
  4. 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  5. 1 tablespoon dark rum
  6. 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  7. 3 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
  8. 3/4 cup sour cream, at room temperature
  9. 1 1/2 cups sliced almonds
  10. 1 cup coarsely chopped chocolate-covered toffee bars, such as Skor bars or Heath bars (four 1.4-ounce bars)
