  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup canola oil or vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 15-ounce can pure pumpkin (not "pumpkin pie filling")
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the caramel icing:
  • 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature and cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • For serving (optional): whipped cream
