- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup canola oil or vegetable oil
- 4 large eggs
- 1 15-ounce can pure pumpkin (not "pumpkin pie filling")
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the caramel icing:
- 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
- 3 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature and cut into small pieces
- 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup water
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- For serving (optional): whipped cream
