Onion bhajis with tarka dahl and almond rice

Ingredients

For the bhajis

  • 150 ml Greek yogurt
  • 75 g gram flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 3/4 tsp turmeric
  • pinches salt
  • 1-2 green or red chillies, deseeded and finely sliced
  • 1 large white onion, sliced
  • 30 g coriander, leaves and stalks, chopped
  • 1 lime, juice only
  • 1 litres vegetable or sunflower oil, for frying
For the dahl

  • 3 tbsp groundnut or vegetable oil
  • 5 cloves garlic, sliced
  • 1 tsp each mustard seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and cardamom pods
  • 250 g split peas, yellow or green
For the rice

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 80 g flaked almonds
  • 350 g basmati rice, rinsed and drained
To serve

  • plain or Greek yogurt
  • mango chutney
