  • 1 lb.  dry yellow split peas, rinsed and drained (about 2 cups)
  • 1/2 cup  regular barley
  • 2 Tbsp.  instant chicken bouillon granules
  • 1   bay leaf
  • 2 stalks  celery, finely chopped
  • 2 medium  carrots, finely chopped (1 cup)
  • 1 medium  onion, finely chopped (1/2 cup)
  • 5 ounces  cooked ham, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1/2 tsp.  ground black pepper
  •   Salt and ground black pepper
