Rosebud Cake

Ingredients

  •   Cake:
  • 3 cups  all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons  baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon  salt
  • 3/4 cup  (1-1/2 sticks) butter, at room temperature
  • 2 cups  granulated sugar
  •   5 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon  vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon  lemon extract
  • 1-1/4 cups  water
  •   Frosting and Filling:
  • 3/4 cup  (1-1/2 sticks) butter, at room temperature
  • 2 boxes  (1 pound each) confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 cup  milk
  • 1/4 cup  fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons  vanilla
  •   Royal Icing
  • cups  for
  • 1 box  (1 pound) confectioners' sugar
  • 3 tablespoons  meringue powder
  • 6 tablespoons  warm water
  • 1 medium-size  bowl until well combined. On medium speed, gradually beat in the water until peaks form and the icing is thick enough to pipe, about 10 minutes.
  •   Leaf green soft gel food paste coloring
  •   Fuchsia soft gel food paste coloring
  • 1/2 cup  strawberry preserves
