Almond-crunch Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 recipe  Pastry for Single-Crust Pie (see below)
  • 1/4 cup  finely chopped almonds or pecans
  • 1/4 cup  packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons  butter (no substitutes), softened
  • 1 teaspoon  finely shredded orange peel
  • 2   eggs, beaten
  • 1 15-ounce can  pumpkin (1-3/4 cups)
  • 3/4 cup  packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon  all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon  ground cinnamon*
  • 1/2 teaspoon  ground nutmeg*
  • 1/4 teaspoon  ground ginger*
  • 1 12-ounce can  evaporated milk (1-1/2 cups) or 1-1/2 cups half-and-half or light cream
  •   Whipped cream (optional)
