- 2 (15-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, drained
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can chicken broth
- 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, or to taste
- 1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped collard greens, thawed and excess moisture squeezed out

- 1-1/2 cups cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1-1/3 cups buttermilk
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley
- Sour cream and chopped parsley for garnish, optional
