  • 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out

For the lemon and liquorice battenberg
  • 150g/5½oz butter

  • 150g/5½oz sugar

  • 150g/5½oz plain flour

  • 3 free-range eggs

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1 lemon, juice and zest

  • 25ml/1fl oz liquorice syrup

  • 300g/10½oz lemon curd

  • 500g/1lb 2oz ready-to-roll black icing

For the lemon custard tarts
  • 125g/4½ oz plain flour

  • 60g/2oz butter

  • 165g/6oz sugar

  • 2 free-range eggs

  • 5 free-range egg yolks

  • 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out

  • 5 lemons, zest and juice only

  • 125ml/4fl oz double cream

  • 125ml/4fl oz milk

For the lemonade
  • 500ml/18fl oz water

  • 500g/1lb 2oz sugar

  • 1kg/2lb 4oz glucose syrup

  • 20 lemons

For the lemon curd meringues
  • 4 free-range egg whites

  • 425g/15oz sugar

  • 10 lemons, zest and juice

  • 200g/7oz butter

  • 8 free-range eggs

  • 100g/3½oz cornflour
