• 1 yellow onion, peeled and diced
• 1 green bell pepper, cored seeded and diced
• ¾ cup tomato purée
• 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
• 1½ tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon honey
• 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
• ½ teaspoon chile powder
• ½ 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
• freshly ground pepper, to taste

For serving:
• 4 whole wheat hamburger buns or whole wheat wraps
• 1 cup shredded lettuce
