  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup firmly packed vegetable shortening or lard or a half-and-half mixture of the two
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • One 1/4-ounce package active dry yeast dissolved in 1/4 cup very warm water (105° to 115° F.)
