Walnut and Almond Cake with Orange-Pomegranate Compote

  • 1 3/4 cups walnuts
  • 1 cup whole almonds
  • 1/4 cup matzo cake meal

    • 8 large eggs, separated
    • 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
    • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup sugar, divided
    • 2 tablespoons orange juice

    Syrup and compote
    • 4 large oranges, peel of 1 orange removed in strips and reserved

    • 1 cup pure unsweetened pomegranate juice
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
