  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 cups 1-inch cubes French bread or homemade-style white bread
  • 8 ounces white cheddar cheese, grated (about 2 cups)
