    3 cloves garlic, minced
    6 cups water or vegetable broth
    1 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
    1 1/2 teaspoon rubbed sage
    1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
    1/2 cup brown rice
    1 15-ounce can great northern beans, drained and well-rinsed
    1-2 teaspoons lemon juice
