- 3 tablespoons cooking oil, chicken fat, or lard
- 2 pieces cinnamon sticks, each 4 inches long
- 4 whole star anise
- 2 cups coconut milk
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Kaffir limes, finely cut
- Salt to taste, about 1 teaspoon
