- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 cups dark-brown sugar, firmly packed
- 1 cup Apple Butter
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 2 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
- 3 to 4 crisp and tart cooking apples, such as Ida Red or Empire
- Granulated sugar, for sprinkling (optional)
