Chicken Flowerpot Pie

Ingredients


  • PASTRY:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup cold butter, cut into thin slices
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/3 cup ice water

  • FILLING:
  • 1 broiler/fryer chicken (3 to 4 pounds), cut up
  • 2 quarts water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1-1/2 cups fresh or frozen cut green beans
  • 1-1/2 cups thinly sliced carrots
  • 1 cup diced peeled potatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 1 package (10 ounces) frozen peas
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • GLAZE:
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon cold water

  • OTHER MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • 6 new clay flowerpots (4-inch diameter)
  • Canola oil

  • Aluminum foil

  • Decorative seed packets glued onto wooden craft sticks
