Ingredients

  • 1 box of store bought pie dough (2 pie dough circles for a 9-inch pie)
  • All-purpose flour to roll out dough
  • 3 pounds mixed Gala and Granny Smith apples (about 6 small apples), peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch thick wedges
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten with a fork
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sanding sugar
