• 3   black plums or large Italian prune plums, halved and pitted (10 ounces)
• 6 cups  water
• 1/3 cup  sugar
• 1 tablespoon  fresh lemon juice
• 1/2 teaspoon  cinnamon
• 1 pinch of  freshly grated nutmeg
