  • 1 large  onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 medium  carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 clove  garlic, minced
  • 1 14-ounce can  beef broth
  • 1/2 cup  dry red wine or beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon  grape jelly
  • 1 teaspoon  sugar
  • 1/2 of a small head  red cabbage
  • 2   Granny Smith apples, cored, and sliced
